SIX WEDNESDAYS

APRIL 19 - MAY 24, 2023

What impact has travel and study had on American artists through the centuries? How did their experiences help interpret and redefine the idea of ‘American Art’? The class will explore a wide range of artists and themes from the Revolutionary War period to present, including works by Benjamin West, Edmonia Lewis, John Singleton Copley, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, Berenice Abbott, Edward Weston, and Elizabeth Catlett— uncovering how their work was shaped by notions of cultural encounter, American Individualism, and global identities.
